Spring quarter OPT applications now being accepted

The ISSO is accepting OPT applications from students who complete classwork spring quarter 2012. The OPT application deadline for spring quarter is 60 days after the F-1 student's course of study end date, which is typically the final day of classes for any given quarter. Processing time for OPT takes close to nine weeks.

To download a current OPT application, log onto MySCAD, and under the "Resources" tab, click on the pull down menu under the forms channel "International Student Services." Under this tab, select "Optional Practical Training Form — Savannah" or "Optional Practical Training Form — Atlanta."

The filing fee is $380.

2012 "Far From Home" exhibition runs through May 11 at La Galerie Bleue

The "Far From Home" juried exhibition, sponsored by the international student services office and the English as a Second Language department, runs through May 11 at La Galerie Bleue in Montgomery Hall, 3515 Montgomery St., Savannah, Georgia.

SCAD scholarships for current students

Scholarships are available to currently enrolled SCAD students based on academic achievement and/or financial need. Students must have completed 45 undergraduate hours or 15 graduate hours at SCAD in order to be eligible. Electronic applications are available only during the month of April and are disbursed to students the following school year.

Scholarships for currently enrolled SCAD students are offered through the department of institutional advancement and administered by student financial services.

Spring quarter job searching, OPT, H1B workshop — May 11

F-1 students who are interested in learning more about work options beyond optional practical training should attend the annual spring quarter OPT, H1B and permanent residency workshop with immigration attorney Robert "Bob" N. Johnson. This ISSO-sponsored event is May 11 and gets underway at 1 p.m. in Habersham Hall, 235 Habersham St.

Sponsored by ISSO, the workshop will offer information and skills building for international students seeking employment after graduation.

A list of the sessions is outlined below. Come to some or all of the following presentations

Learn how career and alumni success at SCAD can assist you with finding jobs in the U.S. and abroad.

ISSO sponsors kayak trip down the Ogeechee River — April 27

Join ISSO staff April 27 for a kayak trip down the Ogeechee River, 20 minutes from downtown Savannah. The Ogeechee River passes through broad expanses of lowland swamp, where parts of the river are completely shaded by sycamore, willow, sweet gum and cypress laden with moss. The current is slow, in keeping with the tranquil atmosphere, and the flora and fauna are abundantly varied.

The water is bright, clean and fun to swim in. Midway through the trip, participants will stop along the riverbanks for lunch featuring several delicacies prepared by Chef Jeff. Water and soft drinks will be provided throughout the trip with cold watermelon waiting for us at the end of our paddling journey. The trip from start to finish usually lasts three to four hours.

Transportation departs 8:30 a.m., Habersham Hall, 235 Habersham St. The group will return to SCAD by 3:30 p.m. The $25 cost includes transportation, kayak rental, lunch on the river, snacks and drinks. To sign up, email or call 912.525.7304.

Weekly volunteer opportunities at the West Broad Street YMCA again this quarter

Come spend a fun hour each Monday afternoon from 5-6 p.m. helping the young children with their art projects at the YMCA just west of Martin Luther King Boulevard. Art lessons happen each week; come when you can. It's fun and relaxing. Email Jan Dupuy if you'd like to attend.

Whitewater rafting trip — May 4-6

The ISSO and student recreation will sponsor a rafting trip on the Ocoee River in Tennessee, May 4-6. The Ocoee River was home to the 1996 Summer Olympics kayaking competition and boasts some of the most incredible whitewater rapids east of the Mississippi River. Vans depart 9 a.m., May 4, from Habersham Hall, 235 Habersham St. The group will arrive at Spring House, SCAD Atlanta, 1470 Spring St. by mid afternoon. At 8 a.m., May 5, the group will depart SCAD Atlanta for the Ocoee River.

Whitewater rafting will take place at 1 p.m. Upon completion of the 2.5-hour rafting trip, the group will return to SCAD Atlanta's Spring House residence halls. The group will depart at 9 a.m., May 6, bound for Savannah. The trip cost includes roundtrip transportation, two nights lodging, rafting fees and a picnic lunch just before rafting on May 5. All other meals and incidentals are on your own. There is a limit of 20 participants, Sign up early by emailing or calling 912.525.7304. $70 is the cost of the trip, and paying the full amount in advance guarantees your slot. Refunds permitted only if we are able to fill your slot.

Atlanta
UNI and ISSO sponsors field trip to Stone Mountain — April 28

Join ISSO and UNI Intercultural Club for a field trip to one of the natural wonders of the Southeastern United States. Stone Mountain is one of the largest exposed rocks in the world. During the trip we will have a casual hike up the mountain to see the breathtaking views from its top, take a trip back in time in a visit the historic village at its base, and share a picnic in the field below its most spectacular cliff face.

The shuttle departs at 10 a.m. from outside the SCAD bookstore, and returns by 4 p.m. Students must be willing to hike for an hour up the mountain, and should bring comfortable shoes, bottled water and a pack lunch for the picnic. There is no charge for participation, and this event is open to all SCAD students, professors and staff. Email Peter May to sign up.

Nigeria Coffee Hour — May 2, 1-2:30 in the Hub

ISSO and UNI are celebrating Nigerian culture this quarter. The celebrations begin 1 p.m., May 2, with our international coffee hour in the Hub. Join us for food, music and all things Nigerian! Forget what you may think about Nigeria — this event will go beyond stereotypes to uncover a rich country with a diversity of languages, an ancient history and a vibrant, contemporary culture.
